Make a new fitness routine at the JCC your New Year’s resolution for 2019

There is no better time than the New Year to create a new approach to getting healthy. The start of a new year brings new opportunities for fresh beginnings and self-improvement. Why not make a new fitness regimen at the JCC your New Year’s resolution for 2019? Here are a few ideas to improve your mental, emotional, and physical health from healthprep.com that we at the JCC can help you with this year.

Do you have trouble starting a new fitness regimen? If so, then keep it simple. Make a commitment to just move. It’s okay to start slow, with a low-impact activity like walking. You can easily do this in all kinds of weather, on one of the many treadmills on the JCC fitness floor. Studies show that a brisk walk or run burns calories, improves muscle strength, and works the cardiovascular system. The American Heart Association states that walking or running can reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer, heart disease, type 2 Diabetes, and osteoporosis. It can also lower high blood pressure and improve blood sugar levels.

If you are new to working out or just coming back to it, make it your goal to walk for at least twenty minutes a day. Even a short walk can help improve focus and alleviate headaches, fatigue, and depression. It can also improve mental health, as physical activity causes the brain to release dopamine (the “feel-good” hormone). Taking this simple step will give you a sense of achievement, improving your self-esteem and body confidence.

Finding a workout buddy can also be a great strategy for sticking with your New Year’s fitness plan. Multiple studies have shown increased motivation when you train with another person or other people. But choose your partner wisely; you want someone whose company you enjoy and who is comfortable moving somewhere around your pace. You and your buddy should motivate and encourage one another, so don’t pick someone whose example will discourage you or hold you back.

If you already have a workout regimen that’s getting old, it may be time to switch things up. This is an important strategy for getting the most out of your workout time. By switching up your regular workout routine and trying something different, such as HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), Tabata, Pilates or Yoga, you not only avoid boredom, but you also shock your muscles (in a good way). By doing new exercises and taking on fitness challenges, you avoid getting stuck at a “fitness plateau” from which you never seem to improve.

If you like seeing your workouts by the numbers, wearable technology (activity trackers, smart watches and heart rate monitors) can give you motivating and useful feedback about your health and level of activity. Many estimate your steps, sleep, standing time, calories burned, and time spent working out. Heart rate monitors in particular can give you objective information about how hard you’re actually working during a sweaty aerobic workout. This can help ensure that you are exercising safely and appropriately while also challenging yourself. It’s important to realize that how you feel isn’t always an effective measure of how hard you’re working; factors such as the room temperature and how much you like your workout are just a few things that can influence how hard a workout feels.
