Sis Levy mourned; was devoted to area seniors

SIS LEVY SIS LEVY Sis Levy, of Voorhees and Cherry Hill, passed away on Dec. 19. She was devoted to Jewish seniors and their wellbeing, and will be missed by many.

Every year, the Jewish Federation’s Jewish Senior Housing and Healthcare Service (JSHHS) presents the Sis Levy Service Award to someone who exemplifies her life of service to seniors.

Sis Levy was generous with both her resources and her time, according to David Gutin, president of Jewish Senior Housing and Healthcare Service. “If she saw a need, she would volunteer to meet it and mobilize others,” he said.

One incident that exemplified her devotion to the area’s Jewish seniors was that on her 50th birthday, her husband told her that she could have anything she wanted as a gift—jewelry or a trip, for example. She chose to rent a bus and take 60 residents of Jewish Senior Housing out to lunch. This program of volunteers taking seniors out to lunch continues to this day.

“This was an opportunity for volunteers and residents to get to know each other and for the volunteers to treat the residents to something special,” said Gutin.

Another incident that exemplified Levy’s devotion was when she noticed that the furniture in the lobby of the Saltzman House was starting to look shabby. “Sis came to us and said that the furniture needed to be replaced. She said to replace it and she would pay for it,” said Gutin.

Gutin said that when Levy moved to Lions Gate, she became involved in all the activities. She was an honorary JSHHS Board member, attended all the meetings, and spoke up for the needs of the residents. “She was a cheerleader for all our senior programs and a role model for younger volunteers. She was an optimist with a willingness to give back in whatever way she could.”

Sis Levy was a founder and leader of both the Jewish Geriatric Home Auxiliary and Jewish Senior Housing Associates. She also established an endowment fund to benefit residents.

“She was a classy lady. She really was special. We’ll miss her as an agency and a community,” said Gutin.

She was the wife of the late Irwin “Irv” Levy. Mother of Larry (Sherri) Levy, Jane Deal, and Nanci (Michael) Epstein. Grandmother of Evan and Justin Levy, Jordyn and Danielle Deal, and Ethan, Gabrielle and Aidan Epstein. Sister of the late Norman (Donna) Levinson.
