Stand Up Initiative aiding the community through Tzedakah, Tikkun Olam

Regional Mazkirim

A main focus of BBYO in South Jersey is Tikkun Olam and Tzekakah, which is a part of our Stand Up Initiative. Each chapter works together to identify causes they are passionate about and want to affect positive change for. After choosing Stand Up Causes, chapters then work to identify specific charities to work with for service and philanthropic opportunities. The last arm of Stand Up is advocacy in which the chapters dedicate programs to educate their chapters and determine how they can raise awareness for their causes.

Woodcrest AZA motioned this past year for a new Stand Up Cause, Friends of the Israeli Defense Force. Established in 1981, Friends of the Israel Defense Force’s mission is to offer educational, cultural, recreational, social services programs, and facilities that provide hope, purpose, and life-changing support for the soldiers who protect Israel and Jews worldwide. Woodcrest has partnered with BJs and is fundraising for their chapter and the Friends of the IDF by selling pies for Thanksgiving. Woodcrest will continue to raise funds for their chosen Stand Up Cause throughout the year as well as programming to talk about the brave men and women who defend our homeland.

Another South Jersey chapter, Ohev BBG, has been continuously working to support their cause as after each event they collect apparel and clothes to donate to their Stand Up Cause’s organization, Our Closet. Our Closet is powered by JFCS and is a volunteer-driven program with the goal of providing clothing to vulnerable people and families throughout the Greater Philadelphia region. The organization distributes clothing free of charge by operating “pop-up shops” as well as providing emergency response packages to community members in crisis. Ohev will be holding a bake sale soon to raise funds for the organization as well as running programs that involve advocacy for their cause. What the members of Ohev BBG are doing is very remarkable, and we are so proud of them!

Otzma AZA has chosen to dedicate their chapter to supporting animals in the community via the Animal Welfare Society. To support the Animal Welfare Society, Otzma AZA will be holding a doggy drive where members of the South Jersey community will bring their dogs to a playdate and collect pet toys and food to donate.

This year, South Jersey Region has chosen our community as our cause. So each month, a cause within our community will be chosen. For the month of November, SJR will be focusing on hunger within South Jersey, a cause that unfortunately impacts so many people around the world. At our monthly meetings and BBYO Night on Nov. 18, SJR is having a food drive for the JFCS food bank.

The chapters of SJR BBYO are proud of their efforts to bring awareness and positively affect change in their communities.
