“Number the Stars” is a fictional retelling of actual events occurring in Denmark during the Holocaust. Unlike all other countries occupied by the Germans during World War II, Denmark did not permit the Nazis to deport Danish Jews to the concentration and death camps. Instead, many Danes worked together to smuggle virtually the entire Jewish population of Denmark to safety in Sweden.

Performed by community members, this musical version of “Number the Stars” has been put on by Beth Judah and Shirat Hayam for 12 years, and has reached over 14,000 students. The show is particularly appropriate for young audiences because it talks about the Holocaust in a way that is accessible to elementary and middle school students, enabling them to begin to grapple with a very difficult but important topic.

Morning performances of the musical will be offered at Shirat Hayam on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 22 and 23, at 10 a.m., and on Thursday, May 24, at 10:30 a.m. There will also be evening performances on Wednesday and Thursday, May 23 and 24, at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $10 for children and seniors. All are encouraged to attend.

Shirat Hayam is located at 700 N. Swarthmore Avenue in Ventnor. For more information, call (609) 822-7116. s
