Israel 70 Celebration April 22 will be an extravaganza for all

By KATZ JCC Marketing Dept.

On Sunday, Apr. 22, when the Israel 70 Celebration parade concludes at the Katz JCC in Cherry Hill, revelers will step off Kresson Road, out of South Jersey and onto Jerusalem’s famous pedestrian mall—Ben Yehuda Street. Passing under garlands of Israeli flags and the well-known umbrella canopy that is the subject of thousands of tourist photos, you will feel the excitement of being in Israel on Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day. Israeli music will fill the air, shops and cafes will be open for business, and talented musicians and performers will grace the stage throughout the day. Unique activities for the all ages will keep every member of the family excited and engaged.

As you weave in and out of our Ben Yehuda Street, you’ll find your own piece of Israel through wonderful jewelry, clothing, gifts, chocolates and much more, many from Israeli designers or manufactured in Israel. “Everything we carry from Margarita Active Wear is handmade by members of Kibbutz Saar in the Western Galilee,” explained Heidi Checkoff, owner of Lily Jade, who will be a vendor at the event. “I just visited there with my family and I am really proud to be able to support an Israeli business and bring Israeli products to the US.”

When you’ve worked up an appetite from shopping, wonderful food and drinks will be waiting. Enjoy a cold brew at Kramer Beverage’s beer garden, re-energize at the coffee shop, or sample new flavors from SodaStream, a well-known beverage company in the States whose headquarters are in Israel! If your idea of Israeli food begins and ends with falafel, there will be much new to explore; browse ShopRite’s kosher market and sample their selection of Middle Eastern foods, or sit and enjoy lunch from the Shakshooka food truck for their spin on the traditional Shakshuka egg dish. Of course, if you find yourself a little homesick, Nina’s Waffles, the Pop Shop, and others will be providing a taste of America’s favorite foods.

A unique feature you will find on our Ben Yehuda Street is activities galore for all ages. Everyone will be invited to participate in an event-wide scavenger hunt created by our teen committee. The famous painted garage doors from the Machane Yehuda Shuk (“marketplace”) will be waiting for you to add your artistic flair to create three separate Israel 70 community murals. Our South Jersey synagogues, Jewish day schools, and the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey and its family of agencies will each present a themed activity related to different locations in Israel, such as lafa (flatbread) making, virtual reality tours, henna tattoos, spa treatments, and a special “Kid’s Kibbutz” for young children sponsored by Israel Bonds.

There will also be ample opportunity to grab a seat, relax and enjoy performances by iShir and the Daddy-O’s, Al’s Chorale, HaZamir Choir, CBT Band, as well as a Krav Maga demonstration, and Israeli dancing. Additionally, Philly Custom DJ will be on hand to play the most popular American and Israeli tunes.

Make sure you bring extra shekels to take full advantage of our Israeli market.

The parade will kick off from Cherry Hill East at 11:30 a.m., and Ben Yehuda Street will be open from 12 noon to 4 p.m. The Israel 70 Celebration is sponsored by The Ravitz Family Markets, Needleman Management, SodaStream, Israel Bonds, and a grant from the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey. Like our event page and you could win prizes from the vendors!
