Federation provides the support our agencies need to thrive

The Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey has been around since 1922—and in its current building since 1997. And yet, there are still some people in our community who think they don’t really know us. That always surprises me because these same people do know about the JCC, JFCS, JCRC, JSHHS, JCF, and the Voice. So in the end they do really know us.

Federation is the hidden power behind all the good work our agencies accomplish in the community. We keep the lights on for our agencies. We provide the infrastructure that every organization needs to stay in business. We purchase the land and own the properties that allow our agencies to build and grow to meet the needs of our community.

Without Federation, this year we wouldn’t be celebrating the 20th anniversary of our campus at 1301 Springdale Road. This building houses not only the Federation, but also the JCC’s Health and Wellness Center and Early Childhood Center, as well as the offices of JFCS, JCRC, JCF, and the Voice. On our campus, there are services and social and recreational programming for every age, stage, and need in life, whether you are an older adult, and individual with special needs, or a family with young children.

Federation’s planning, vision, financial resources, and risk taking made possible the JCC Camps at Medford—the largest Jewish day camp in North America; the Saltzman, Dubin, and Gesher Houses; Lions Gate; and most recently, our newest property at 1721 Springdale Road. Our low- and moderate-income housing for older adults with limited means and a state-of-the-art continuing care retirement community are here due to Federation’s vision and planning.

We provide two types of allocations to our family of agencies each year. The first is the traditional monetary allocation that gives unrestricted dollars to the agencies to fund their programs and services. The second is an in-kind allocation we started last year to explain the amount of operational back-end support the Jewish Federation gives to make each agency “whole.” That is truly a value added. Human resources and IT support are two services the agencies do not pay for—these are costs absorbed and provided by Federation because we are one system, truly a family of agencies.

So, if you wonder whom you’re supporting when you pledge a gift to Federation, the answer is: You are supporting Federation, its family of agencies, Israel, and Jews in need throughout the world. Of every dollar donated, 90 cents is allocated back to our agencies for programming and services to the community as well as to Jews worldwide. Help make this year as successful as the years before by making your 2017 pledge to JFund. It’s not too late! Please give today at jewishsouthjersey.org/jfund.
