May is an exciting time in South Jersey Region BBYO (SJR). Spring has finally sprung and we have been hard at work preparing SJR for a bigger than ever end of year.

SJR BBYO is busy actively planning our last convention of the year, Spring Thing. Our committee of 10 teen leaders from the tri-county area has been meeting weekly to create the weekend’s services, programs, social activities, and more. The teens are also excited to announce that the famous (in the BBYO world) Eric Hunker will be joining us this year as our song leader. The teens are also happy to be returning to Camp Saginaw for convention after a one-year hiatus.

Chelsea Stern, Dafna vice president of membership said, “Saginaw is where I spent my first Spring Thing and where I first made friends outside of my chapter and had an amazing Havdalah song session with Eric Hunker. Returning this year will bring back all of my first memories.” As registration is closing, SJR has a record number of teens joining us for convention to learn, elect the new regional board, and hear the Seniors perform their Life Ceremonies.

Among those having a great time were (bottom, from left), Amanda Rosten, Lisa Gorbati, Gaby Matro, and Alexa Gershon. While planning Spring Thing keeps the Region busy, our chapters have been equally busy engaging their members, holding meaningful Shabbat programming, and creating strong sisterhoods and brotherhoods in their chapters.

This spring, Marlcrest AZA has been diligently working to raise money for Lung Cancer Research as their Stand Up cause. SJR BBYO is very proud of Marlcrest and their efforts, as they have raised $1,300 for this meaningful cause. Their hard work supporting Lung Cancer Research culminated on April 30 with their participation in the 5K Family and Friends Walk for Cancer. Marlcrest members participated in the walk and volunteered along the route.

Additionally, on April 29, Dafna BBG had over 35 BBGs (girls) come together to celebrate and strengthen their sisterhood with a groovy theme. Every girl received a chapter big or little which allowed for everyone to make new friends. They also made cute t-shirts and candles to take home. Trudi Fleishman, Regional s’ganit and Dafna member, said, “The programming was amazing and interactive, resulting in lots of chapter bonding.”

As Dafna BBG worked to bond as sisters, Otzma AZA was doing the same for their brotherhood at Camp Dark Waters. While at Dark Waters, Otzma celebrated Havdalah together, competed as families in Double Dare, and became closer as brothers during a serious program about supporting one another during both the hard and easy times in their lives.

The chapters of SJR BBYO are also working to bring in new BBGs and Alephs (boys) in our community. SJR and our chapters have proudly surpassed our first membership milestone of 580 members and are on our way to 600 with 589 current members. The teens have worked very hard this year and have welcomed more than 200 new members into our family.

SJR BBYO is excited to be heading to Spring Thing soon and then on to their chapter end-of-year events.
