Federation launches Giving Circle

The Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey is excited to announce the launch of a Family Philanthropy Giving Circle, in collaboration with PJ Our Way and The Jewish Community Foundation, Inc. On Feb. 26, seven families participated in the first of three sessions of this initiative aimed at empowering children to be involved with their parent(s) as funders, decision makers, and agents of change in the community.

A giving circle allows individuals or families to pool their funds, and then decide as a group where to donate. Each family contributes the same amount of money and has an equal voice in directing the grant-making. Each session of the Family Philanthropy Giving Circle provides children and their parents with the skills to make this big decision, including identifying their values, deciding between needs and wants, and learning to make difficult financial choices.

Grant requests were made by agencies of the Jewish Federation, in an effort to fund “wish list” programs and services. At the final session, the families will decide which programs or projects to fund.

This initiative would not be possible without matching funds from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.

PJ Our Way, a program of PJ Library, is for children ages 9 through 11 years. PJ Our Way sends free, high-quality chapter books with Jewish themes that children choose themselves. For more information, or to enroll, please visit jewishsouthjersey.org/pjlibrary.
