Bernice Gothard, office manager at Federation

Bernice Gothard, an active and devoted member of the Jewish community, passed away on Oct. 28. She served as the Jewish Federation’s office manager prior to her retirement, worked at Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS), took classes at the Katz JCC, and was a longtime member of Cong. Beth El. She lived in Maple Shade.

In remembering her, Stuart Alperin, past Jewish Federation CEO, said “There are few people of whom one could say that she didn’t have a bad bone in her body. That was Bernice. She had a persistent optimism, always seeing the best in people. In her beloved Yiddish…she had a gitta nashomah. We will all miss her.”

Alperin added, “In ‘The Joys of Yiddish,’ Leo Rosten defined a mensch as ‘someone to admire and emulate, someone of noble character.’ Bernice was a true mensch. She loved people and people loved her. And she loved being Jewish…she loved Yiddish…she loved synagogue… and she loved the Jewish community.”

She was the beloved wife of the late Jack Gothard. Mother of Alan (Jodie Hoffman) Gothard and Sharon (Ned) Weisman. Grandmother of Dylan and Garrett Weisman. Sister of Sheldon Clare.
