Staff Achievement Award to be presented to Deena Sherman

The Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey is proud to recognize and honor Deena Sherman with the Staff Achievement Award for 2015.

On Sunday, Oct. 18, Deena will receive the Staff Achievement Award at the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Jewish Federation at the Weinberg Jewish Community Campus in Cherry Hill.

Deena is a lifelong resident of Cherry Hill. In fact, she is a lifelong resident of the Jewish Federation, having started work with the Katz Jewish Community Center in 1992. She was originally the Children’s Program Director and later was the Associate Camp Director. She supervised Camp Hilltop, Shalom, and Aaron for 20 years. During that time, Deena received various awards from the JCC and JCC Camps at Medford. For Deena, what made her job so unique and special is that she got to see campers and CITs grow up in this community and then send their children to camp. Seeing the next generation of campers has been truly wonderful for her to experience from generation to generation.

Deena moved very far (across the hall) for her current role as Director of Operations for the Jewish Federation. This past year, she oversaw the development of the new Jewish Federation Annex at 1721 Springdale Road. She was instrumental in revitalizing the building, having equipment moved in, and getting it ready for new programs to start. With Deena’s assistance, the Federation Annex now hosts the TOPS day program from JFCS, the Philly Art Center, Chabad Camps, Politz Preschool, and many sports and event rentals. The JFCS Soups & Sweets culinary program will be joining the building next month. The kitchen is being renovated with Deena’s assistance. Within the walls of the Jewish Federation, Deena is overseeing the transition to a new internal database management system.

When asked what is the best part of all her varied responsibilities, Deena stated that she “gets to work with many staff from all of the agencies and we are all working towards one common goal.”

In her personal life, Deena also moved “very far.” She bought her parents’ house and is raising her kids in the same house in Cherry Hill where she grew up. Deena lives in her childhood home with her husband of 23 years, Mike. Her daughter Wendy (18) just moved into Franklin & Marshall College for her freshman year. Her son Eric (15) is a sophomore at Cherry Hill East.

Deena thanks the staff for this award and thinks that it is “pretty cool” that it came from her peers.

Her sense of humor and leadership are two obvious reasons why the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey is honored to present her with the Staff Achievement Award.
