The Jewish community must respond to suffering When many people need help at once, to whom does that help go? When an earthquake ravages Haiti killing hundreds of thousands of people, whom do we help? When a Jew in the Former Soviet Union is sitting in the dark, hungry and shivering, whom do we help? When a local family suffers job loss, domestic abuse, and possible foreclosure on their home, whom do we help? The Jewish answer is obvious—We help everybody? This Sunday, Jan. 31, thousands of people throughout Southern New Jersey will be called and asked to help during the Jewish Federation Annual Campaign’s largest phon-a-thon of the year. Hundreds of your friends and neighbors, after making their own pledges, will reach out on Super Sunday and during the following week, Super Week, to ask you to dig a little deeper. Federation is committed to helping the most vulnerable populations, whenever and wherever needed. The calls for support are growing. At the same time, the economy has cut into the available dollars. Your help is needed now. When the phone rings, and someone on the line asks you to help, remember—We are Jews, and our obligation is to help all in need. |
