Marcel Singer dies; Holocaust educator

Marcel Singer, who fled the Nazis in 1938 and spoke about his Holocaust experiences, died July 12. A Cherry Hill resident, he was 88.

A native of Austria, he fled the Nazis in 1938. He lived in Hong Kong and Shanghai. In 1949, he came to the United States. He had a butcher shop in New York for many years. He came to Southern New Jersey in 2001.

He spoke to students on behalf of the Goodwin Holocaust Museum and Education Center. He was a member of the Katz JCC and the Good Timers. Sid Kurtz, a member of the Good Timers, wrote a book, "The Gentle Butcher of Shanghai," about Singer.

The beloved husband of the late Anna, he is survived by his children, Karen Swisa of Cherry Hill, Debbie Pires of Teaneck, NJ; Linda Beckerman of Stonybrook, NY; Stuart Singer of Charlotte, NC; Bruce Singer of Port Jefferson, NY; and Jeffrey Singer of Elmira, NY; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. .
