Protests continue over parking lot
      Hundreds of demonstrators blocked the street leading to a Jerusalem parking lot that the municipality operates on Shabbat. Some 15 fervently Orthodox men were arrested for blocking the entrance to the Carta parking lot. One policeman was injured and taken to the hospital after being kicked in the stomach.

Over half of Jews want Arab emigration
      More than half of Israeli Jews support encouraging Arabs to leave Israel, according to a new survey. Some 53 percent of Israeli Jews and 77 percent of immigrants to Israel support the emigration idea, according to the Israel Democracy Institute's 2009 survey marking 20 years of immigration from the former Soviet Union. The annual survey has been taken since 2003.

Jordan River may stop flowing
      An environmental group warned that the Jordan River might cease flowing this summer. Officials of Friends of the Earth have measured the flow of the Jordan to be as shallow as 30 centimeters in some of its southern parts and fear it might dry up altogether in a few months, according to a news release.

'Mofaz law' passes Knesset
      The Knesset approved the "Mofaz law," making it easier for lawmakers to break away from their parties. The bill was adopted on second and third reading by a vote of 60 to 43. The vote, which came during a special session called during the Israeli parliament's summer recess, had been delayed two days due to a filibuster by the opposition Kadima Party.
