'The Judge' prepares to celebrate a century of achievement

      EARLY YEARS Born in Chester, Pa., and moved to Camden at the age of four. ALMA MATERS A graduate of Camden High School, he earned both his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania ARMY SERVICE He rose to the rank of captain in the U.S. Army during World War II, and received a citation from President Harry S. SAIL soccer team takes bronze in statewide Special Olympics
     The Samost Jewish Family and Children's Service SAIL soccer team won the bronze medal in Division One at the statewide Special Olympics Fall Festival Tournament. SAIL (Supports to Achieve Independent Living) helps individuals with learning and developmental disabilities live independently in the community through the provision of supports and services.

'Miss Lisa' uses circus act to teach Judaism at Kellman Brown Academy
      Children learning about Jewish values is something one would expect to find at Kellman Brown Academy. Learning about those values from someone doing magic and acrobatics is definitely out of the ordinary. But that is exactly what happened when Lisa Appel, who goes by the stage name of "Miss Lisa," brought her circus act to the Voorhees Jewish day school.

New Jewish food movement moving into Cherry Hill
      It's all cutting edge. And it's still in the planning stages. Under the aegis of the TBS Green Committee, co-coordinators Marty Feigenbaum and Valerie Yasner are doing the spade work (pun) for a program by which South Jersey Jewish families will bring home locally and organically grown produce while guaranteeing a farmer a secure market.

Family gathers at Lions Gate to celebrate resident's 99th birthday
      Visitors streamed into the lobby of Lions Gate's skilled nursing facility as 4 p.m. approached. It was Sunday, Nov. 9, the day of resident Rose Polatnik's birthday party (she would turn 99 on Nov. 11), and her family was gathering for the celebration.

Ivanka Trump starts conversion
      Ivanka Trump has begun the process to convert to Judaism. The daughter of real estate tycoon Donald Trump began the conversion process at Kehilath Jeshurun, an Orthodox synagogue on Manhattan's East Side, Ynet reported. Trump, 27, is engaged to Jewish businessman Jared Kushner.

Temple Emanuel to host Ruth Messinger
      Ruth Messinger, President of the American Jewish World Service, will speak at Temple Emanuel during Shabbat services on Friday Nov. 21. Her talk, called "Bearing Witness: The Crisis in Darfur," will provide a firsthand account of the ongoing genocidal campaign in Darfur, Sudan that has been raging since February, 2003.

      The 2009 Jewish Federation Major Gifts Reception was held on Sunday, Nov. 2 in Cherry Hill at the home of Stephanie and Chuck Cahn. 90 people attended the event which honors men and women in the community who contribute at the highest levels to the Jewish Federation Annual Campaign, special campaigns and/or Federation agencies.
