Rabbis join torture ban bid
      NEW YORK (JTA)- Rabbis for Human Rights joined an interfaith coalition to stop U.S.-sponsored torture. Banners Across America, a project of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, has launched an effort to get houses of worship to hang banners reading "Torture is a moral issue" and "Torture is wrong." Schwartz named Air Force chief
      NEW YORK (JTA)- A Jewish U.S. Air Force veteran has been tapped to be its chief of staff. Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced the appointment of Gen. Norton Schwartz, and named Michael Donley to be the Air Force's next secretary. The appointments are part of a shake up in the service over what the New York Times called "lapses in the handling of nuclear weapons.

Mistrial declared in Seattle rampage
      SEATTLE (JTA)- A judge declared a mistrial in the case of the gunman who shot up the offices of this city's Jewish federation. The King County prosecutor vowed to retry Naveed Haq, 32, who claimed he was not guilty by reason of insanity.

Diplomat documents Shanghai community
      NEW YORK (JTA)- An Israeli diplomat in China is compiling a database of Shanghai's historic Jewish community. The Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, a former synagogue in the Hangkou District of the city, has begun documenting the influx of tens of thousands of Jews fleeing Nazi persecution in Europe.

Prominent Jews join boycott threat
      NEWYORK (JTA)- Several prominent Jews signed on to a boycott threat against the kosher meatpacker Agriprocessors. Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Ruth Messinger and Rabbi Avi Weiss are among the 1,000 signers of a petition organized by Uri L'tzedek, according to its co-director, Shmuly Yanklowitz.
