DEAR EDITOR
Don't blame interfaith marriages
We read with concern Rabbi Ephraim Epstein's Torah commentary of April 23. There is more than one way to stem the tide of assimilation. Rather than blame interfaith marriages for our attrition, we need to attract the entire Jewish people to make Jewish choices. We have no better allies than the non-Jewish members of our own families, who love us. It's time to thank the Catholic dad driving the Hebrew school carpool and the Asian grandma bursting with pride at her granddaughter's Bat Mitzvah, and stop demonizing them. Just as Pharoah's daughter Bitia and Moses' wife Tzipporah were on our side at the time of the Exodus from Egypt, we need to acknowledge the potential for interfaith families to support Jewish growth and flourishing.
