Lecture series to focus on Israel

A three-part lecture series called "One People or Two: Israel and the Future" will be held at the Weinberg Jewish Community Campus beginning on Thurs., April 10. Hosted by the Israel Resource Center, under the aegis of the Jewish Federation Dept. of Jewish Education, the series is part of South Jersey's community-wide Israel at 60 celebration. It will bring renowned Near East scholars to lead discussions concerning the evolution of relations between Israel and the world community from biblical to modern times.

The opening lecture will address "Judea and the Diaspora: The Beginnings of the Bipolar Jewish World after the Babylonian Exile," with Professor Jeffrey Tigay from the University of Pennsylvania presenting. Professor David Starr of Hebrew College will present "One People or Two?: Diaspora, and Jewish Peoplehood" on Thurs. May 15. Professor S. Ilan Troen of Brandeis University will discuss "The New History of Israel- from Celebration to Condemnation" at the concluding Thursday, May 22 lecture. The free lectures will begin at 7:45 p.m.; the community is invited.

The series is funded in part by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, with additional funding the Jewish Federation of Southern NJ, the Jewish Community Foundation, and David and Lisa Forman & Family.
