'Lost synagogue' off Eastern State's Cellblock 7
     It has been more than three and half decades since the last Jewish service at Eastern State Penitentiary, but restoration of the small synagogue, tucked into a narrow alleyway off Cellblock 7 will start next month. A "Lost Synagogue" weekend, Saturday and Sunday, April 5 and 6, will be the only chance for visitors to see the space in its original condition. Located at 22nd and Fairmount Sts., Eastern State once housed the infamous Willie Sutton and Al Capone. For tour information call 215-236-3300 or go to EasternState.org.

Sons of Israel to bestow honors, hear MK Dotan, at April 6 gala
      Member of the Knesset (MK) Amira Dotan will keynote Cong. Sons of Israel's gala celebrating the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel. The dinner is set for April 6, the Cherry Hill synagogue. Dotan will discuss the State of Israel's security, the on-going military actions in Gaza, talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, and much more.

JCF hosts insightful Israeli mayor
      Moti Dotan, the mayor of the Lower Galilee Regional Council in northern Israel, spoke to a group of 20 community members earlier this month. The Jewish Community Foundation, Inc. (JCF) sponsored the lunchtime talk at the Weinberg Jewish Community Campus as a means of community outreach.

'March for Babies' with Connor Perr
      When Connor Perr was born four months premature he weighed only 1 lb. 4 oz. To honor his progress and support the March of Dimes, his parents Richard and Cindy Perr, have formed Team Connor Perr to walk in the upcoming "March for Babies" on Sunday, Apr. 27. The event will be held at 9 a.m. at Challenge Grove Park, Brace & Borton Mill Rd., Cherry Hill.

Chaverim visit Globetrotters
     Cong. Beth El's Chaverim (4th and 5th graders) recently went to see the Harlem Globetrotters. The group had the privilege of creating a "High 5 Tunnel" to welcome the Globetrotters onto the court after half-time.       University professors representing Judaism, Christianity, and Islam spent a recent afternoon discussing the limits of interfaith relations. "Interfaith Encounters: Reading and Writing the Other" was part of the ongoing celebration of the Jewish Publication Society's (JPS) 120th anniversary.

Cetel wins JAG tourney
     Howard Cetel, of Temple Beth Sholom, was the big winner in the recent Jewish Athletic Group (JAG) Racquetball Tournament. Cetel (second from left) won the singles title. He also teamed with Art Levner of Cong. Beth El to win the doubles competition. The tournament attracted 20 players from seven area men's clubs. The players who made the playoffs in the singles competition were (from left), Art Levner (Beth El), Howard Cetel (TBS), Roy Steinberg (Beth El), and Ron Boehm (M'kor Shalom).

      DR. ANDREW M. ALLOY, a gastroenterologist with offices in Voorhees, has been named to serve on the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation Board. Alloy is active as a staff member of the Kennedy Health System and Virtua Health System. He joined the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation about 10 years ago as part of his professional outreach.
