NEW YORK—After a death watch lasting nearly two years, news that the end of the American Jewish Congress was imminent set off a flurry of emails in the Jewish organizational world wondering if the nine-decade-old advocacy group indeed was shuttering its doors.

News of the demise was posted by eJewishPhilanthropy.com, a website focused on Jewish nonprofits.

Brandeis taps GWU law dean as new president

NEW YORK—The board of directors of Brandeis University has tapped the dean of George Washington University’s law school as its next president.

Frederick Lawrence, who has been the dean at George Washington Law since 2005, will succeed Jehuda Reinharz, who announced last fall that he would be leaving Brandeis after 16 years guiding the suburban Boston university.

$10-million fund to aid survivors

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation will establish a $10-million fund for emergency services for Holocaust survivors in North America. The fund, to be established through a grant to be paid out over the next five years, will be distributed through the Conference of Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.

Kafka manuscripts uncovered in Zurich

Original manuscripts by Franz Kafka reportedly were found in safety boxes opened in Zurich, Switzerland. More manuscripts reportedly are stored in vaults in Tel Aviv, six of which were opened.

The manuscripts were revealed as part of a trial over the estate of the Jewish writer’s close friend and literary executor, Max Brod.
