About the Jewish Community Voice

The Voice: A Brief History

The award-winning Jewish Community Voice is the newspaper of record for Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester counties in Southern New Jersey. Since its first issue on Sept. 19, 1941, the Voice has featured the best in local, national, and international news coverage. Today, Jewish Federation Publications (JFP) produces the Voice, a biweekly paper; Attitudes, a lifestyle magazine published twice a year; and Connect, an annual guide to the Jewish Federation agencies, synagogues and organizations serving the Jewish community.

The first issue of the Voice was four pages and early issues were written entirely by volunteers. The writing and leadership of community pioneers Ann E. Lemerman, Albert J. Klein, and Henry Schreibstein helped the Voice become the go-to source for Jewish news in Southern New Jersey.

The Voice has grown to serve an expanding and diverse Jewish community. The paper averages 48 pages per issue and special sections are published throughout the year.
When first published, the Voice kept the 7,500 residents of Camden County informed about Jewish happenings in their own back yards and throughout the Jewish world. In 2008, the Voice continues that mission for the 50,000 Jews of Southern New Jersey.

In every issue, the Voice has the best in local news and features. Check out CompuSchmooze, Cooking, Sports, Books, and more. “Do It,” “Kid Stuff,” and “Going Solo” keep the community informed about upcoming events in the community. The Voice also features the best in analysis, religion writing and Israel coverage.

Advertisers in the Voice, Attitudes, and Connect reach 12,000 upscale households with every issue. It is the place to be seen for jewelers, restaurants, real estate brokers, and businesses of every size and specialty.

The Voice is your hometown paper.

Mission Statement
Jewish Federation Publications
Jewish Federation Publications publishes a bi-weekly newspaper, The Voice; a semi-annual lifestyle magazine, Attitudes, and an annual social services directory, Connect. They are mailed to all households making a minimum annual contribution of $25 to the Federation Annual Campaign.

The Voice tells Federation's story and promotes its fundraising efforts. Serving the Federation family of agencies as a publicity vehicle, the paper also features news of the tri-county synagogue community and of the area's many active Jewish organizations.

Helping to educate the community by providing news and a spectrum of opinion concerning Israel and national and international issues of special Jewish interest, the Voice is responsible for deciding which news stories are covered in its pages and for working with Federation executive/professional staff to determine the best way to report on sensitive issues.

Attitudes targets the 35-55 year old upscale Jewish professional and celebrates the spiritually, socially, culturally and recreationally rich South Jersey Jewish community. With a strong local orientation, it also reaches out with stories of national and international scope that affect its readers.

Controversy is not avoided, nor are problems ignored. Serious issues are dealt with as appropriate. Approaching the world through Jewish eyes, the magazine includes lifestyle articles (i.e. home decor, fashion, entertainment, restaurants, recipes ) which, while not specifically Jewish, are important in the life of the South Jersey Jewish community.

Connect provides a comprehensive list of services, synagogues, educational facilities, Israeli organizations, youth activities, Judaica shops and kosher food stores and restaurants.
