Answer the call on Super Sunday to help Jews here and around the world

The famous Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen once likened a community to a ship in which “everyone must be prepared to take the helm.” The Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey is the perfect example of Ibsen’s sentiment. It is a community that thrives thanks to the commitment of its many members to take an active role and help its agencies succeed. Those in need have a comprehensive array of social services available to them, such as counseling, food pantries, and family assistance, through Jewish Family & Children’s Service; our elderly population is well cared for by the Jewish Senior Housing and Healthcare Service; the Jewish Community Relations Council advocates for the community, engages in outreach, and takes a stand on issues of public policy; the Katz JCC provides a home base for our community, where all are welcome to explore Jewish heritage through cultural, social, and health and wellness programs throughout the year; organizations serving our community benefit from financial awards and grants from the Jewish Community Foundation; and the Jewish Community Voice keeps the community informed and educated about local and international events. Federation is the sum of its many parts, each of which is indispensable, and the work it does changes lives.

This is why it is so vital that every member of the South Jersey Jewish community participate in Super Sunday and Super Week 2019, January 27-31, the year’s largest fundraising event in support of JFund, which is the source of Federation’s impact. The week kicks off with Super Sunday on January 27, the Jewish Federation’s annual phon-a-thon at which volunteers serve in phone and clerical shifts, one in the morning (9:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) and one in the evening (4:15-7:30 p.m.). All are invited to come and assist on Super Sunday, or for another shift during Super Week, Monday, Jan. 28 through Thursday, Jan. 31 (7-9 p.m. each night).

Those unable to donate their time—and those who are—are encouraged to give what they can in support of JFund. Even the smallest pledge can truly make a difference—especially as the Marvin Samson Foundation will match every new or increased gift. These pledges make indelible imprints on the lives of people in the South Jersey Jewish community and in Jewish communities around the world. Those with special needs, for example, receive occupational and developmental skills they need to live independently. Holocaust survivors in need are assisted with food, shelter, healthcare, and companionship. JFund also ensures that essentials like safety, nourishment, and school transportation reach Jewish children in need in Israel and throughout the world.

Super Week is the time when our community comes together to “take the helm” and ensure that the Jewish Federation’s family of agencies can provide their services successfully. This collective effort is the key to our strength as a community, and the reason we will continue to thrive.
